How is the league organized?
The purpose of KYB is to provide a league for the youth in the Katy area to play
basketball in an environment that promotes fun and learning. We have both Girls
and Boys divisions and we provide competitive and recreational play according to
skill level.
Boys: Rookies, Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior and Collegiate divisions.
Girls: Rookies, Freshman and Sophomores (combined division), Junior and Senior (combined
division), and Collegiate.

How large is the league?
We expect in excess of 2,500 students to participate. There are 10 players per team,
which means 250 teams/coaches. The ratio of boys to girls is approximately 2 to
1.

Why is registration so early?
It is important that the league has enough time to conduct registration, tryouts,
set league size, order uniforms, and arrange for adequate practice and game facilities
for all teams.

What does my registration fee pay for?

and individual pictures for each player (personalized pictures may be available
for an additional fee), equipment purchases and equipment repair. (KYB has purchased
many of the elementary scoreboards), professional accounting services, printing,
postage, and advertisements, etc.

How are drafted teams formed?
For freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors, there is a tryout and a draft. Tryout
is more accurately described as an evaluation event. The players will demonstrate
their ability through a series of skill drills. They will be evaluated by a group
of pre-selected coaches. We will then conduct a draft in which the first 50 to 80
players will be drafted into the National League. The next 50 to 80 players will
be drafted into the American League. The number of drafted teams may vary from five
to eight per league. No drafted league will have more than eight teams nor less
than five.

How are "non-drafted" teams formed?
All freshmen through senior players who are not drafted will be assigned to teams
by the Player Agents according to the following guidelines: Same school, same grade
& same subdivision whenever possible. Special transportation needs will be given
consideration whenever possible. Availability of coaches and a very great disparity
of participation per school often create a necessity to build teams, which may consist
of multiple schools and/or subdivisions. We will honor ALL requests to insure that
your child does not play for a coach you specifically want to avoid. These requests
are kept in complete
confidence.

How are rookie teams formed?
The same way non-drafted teams are formed.

How are collegiate teams formed?
Collegiate teams will be built only after junior high basketball tryouts are completed.
There will be no tryouts for the collegiate league.
When and where will practices and games be held?
All practices and games will be held at KISD facilities. Specific times and locations
will be assigned to teams according to the limitation/availability of the coach.
You may be required to travel across the district for practice. Rookies, freshmen
and sophomores will play at the elementary schools. Juniors, seniors, and collegiate
level will play at the junior high school gymnasiums. All regular season games will
be played on Saturdays in January and February.

Can I be drafted if I miss tryouts?
Yes. But only if someone nominates you. Then, your desire to play for a drafted
team must be confirmed by a parent or guardian by one of our Player Agents.
What is the purpose of tryouts?
The tryout is an opportunity for our coaches to evaluate the available talent within
an age group. We attempt to play kids of equal ability against one another. This
is an effort to identify the best players and have them play in one of our more
competitive leagues.

How are coaches selected?
Adults volunteer to coach or are recruited by our Player Agents. Each prospective
coach completes an application and is screened by a Player Agent. Recommendations
are made to the Board. Applicants who are approved by a majority of the Board are
assigned to teams.

Junior high players
We, as the Board of Directors of KYB have declared that kids who make their junior
high teams are NOT eligible to also play for KYB. We are taking this position in
order provide the greatest opportunity for the youth of KATY to play in an organized
basketball league.

What is the "A" team "B" team rule?
Prior to each game each coach will designate his/her five "best players"
as his/her "A" team. "Best player" shall be defined regardless
of size or position of the players according to following guidelines. Each coach
will rank his/her players as if he/she were conducting a draft. If you were choosing
two teams to scrimmage against each other, whom would you pick first, as your "best"
player, from the ten available players? Then, if that player was absent and there
were only nine to choose from, who would be your "best" player if you
were to start a team? If both players were absent and there were only eight to choose
from, who would be your "best" player? And so on through your top five
players. That is the "A" team. The remaining five players are the "B"
team. Note that the best five may change from time to time as players grow and improve
at different rates or they become more comfortable in the competitive arena. This
requires coaches to continue to reevaluate the order of their players from game
to game as the season progresses.
